Brazilian Maria Gomes is the oldest person in the world.

Guinness World Records recognized the Brazilian Maria Gomes Valentim, of 114 years and 313 days, as the oldest person in the world. The information was released on wednesday on the company website, responsible for publishing the records.

Mara was born on July 9, 1896 in the town of Carangola (MG), where she lives today. She married Joao Valentim in 1913, leaving her widow in 1946. With her husband, Maria had a son, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

According to Guinness, Maria attributes her longevity to a healthy diet - she says she eats a bagel every morning with coffee, fruit, and occasionally milk with flaxseed. The record states that she can eat without anyone's help and still afford to drink a glass of wine occasionally.

The company claims that 99% of people who claim to be 115 years or more lie or do not have documents to prove age.
