Legends: Saci Perere v Leprechaun

Leprechaun

Saci Perere

The Saci Pererê is so famous character of Brazilian folklore that he has his own day in the year just to remind about him, Oct. 31. Probably originated among the indigenous peoples of southern Brazil, during the colonial period (possibly in the late eighteenth century). At that time, was represented by an Indian boy, tanned skin and a tail, who lived in the forest doing a mess with another people.

However, when migrated to the north, myth and character were modified to receive influences of African culture. The Saci became a young black man with only one leg, because, according to the myth, the other had lost in a capoeira fight. Came to be represented using a red cap and a pipe, typical of African culture. Until today he is represented in this way.

The behavior is the hallmark of this folklore character. Very fun and playful, the SACI is messing around all the time in forests and houses. Frightening travelers, hiding household objects, makeing noises, scaring horses and bulls in the pasture . Despite the jokes, do not do practical attitudes in order to harm someone or do evil.

The myth says that he moves within swirls of wind and catching him is necessary to play a sieve over it. After done, you should take the cap and hold the SACI in a bottle. Only in this way he will meet its "owner."

But according to the myth, the SACI is not only designed to play. He is a connoisseur of important herbs in the forest, the manufacture of medicines and teas made from plants. It tracks and stores all these secrets and knowledge. Those who enter the forests in search of these herbs should, according to mythology, to ask his permission. Otherwise, he would become another victim of their mischief.

The belief in this character is still very strong in the inner region of Brazil. Around the campfires, the elders recount their experiences with the SACI to the youngest. Through oral culture, the myth will be perpetuated. However, the character came to major urban centers through literature, television and comics.

Who first portrayed the character so brilliantly in children's literature, was the writer Monteiro Lobato. In the stories of Sítio do Pica-Pau Amarelo, the SACI appears constantly. He lives messing with the characters of the site. The legend spread throughout Brazil as the stories of Lobato won the television screens, becoming in the show, broadcast during the decades of 1970-80. The SACI also appears in various moments of comic books about Chico Bento, Mauricio de Souza.
