Perfil: Ceu

Her name can be translated from Portuguese as "sky" and "heaven", something she lives up to admirably. CéU's music and voice have been described as heavenly since the release of her debut album in 2005. From an early age, CéU has immersed herself in several genres of music, resulting in a completely unique sound present on both of her albums.

Background and Influences

Maria do Céu Whitaker Poças was born on April 17th, 1980, in São Paolo, Brazil, a city she refers to as a "musical melting pot". She grew up with an appreciation for Brazilian music and composers thanks to her father, who was a composer, arranger, and musicologist himself.

CéU's music is inspired by a wide variety of styles and musicians. She claims to have a "strong connection" to root samba and an affinity for black culture, which is at the core of traditional Brazilian music.

The laid-back groove and sensual sound present in every one of CéU's original songs hint at the many different styles she draws from, including jazz, hip hop, soul, rhythm and blues, samba, and electronic music.

International Fame and Awards

CéU moved to New York City before the age of 20, which led to a slew of new influences in different genres, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Erykah Badu, and Lauryn Hill among them. She also met other Brazilian artists in the city, including composer Antonio Pinto, whom she later learned was a distant cousin.

It was through Pinto that CéU met producer Beto Villares, who worked with her on her debut album back in São Paolo. The self-titled CD was released by Urban Jungle in 2005. After experiencing success in France and Canada, along with a few other European countries, the album was licensed by San Francisco-based label Six Degrees.

As a result of her affiliation with Six Degrees, CéU became the first international artist featured by Starbuck's Hear Music Debut series, dramatically increasing the singer's exposure and accolades. In 2006, CéU was nominated for a Latin grammy in the "best new artist" category, followed by a "Best Contemporary World Music Album" Grammy nomination in 2007.

In France, CéU was named on of the top five musical revelations of 2005 by Les Inrockuptibles, and she held the number 32 slot on the Canadian pop charts.

On the Rise

Vagarosa, CéU's 2009 release, has already garnered rave reviews. The title translates from Portuguese to something like "easygoing" and "leisurely"; the perfect label for the breezy, funky, and unique sound her band has solidified. As of July, 2009, Vagarosa has sold over 1,300 copies, a sign that Brazil's "heavenly one" will continue to rise on the charts.
