“I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I don’t use drugs, I just lie a little bit”

It´s impossible to talk about the Brazilian music without mentioning the name Sebastião Rodrigues Maia, well-known as Tim Maia. Talented, demanding, religious, controversial, irreverent, but, above all things, true, Tim maia Collected during his time life lots of great hits, criticism, arguments, and processes.

He was born in Tijuca region of Rio de Janeiro, in September 28th 1942, when he was eight-years-old he already sang and at twelve-years-old his father gave him a guitar . During his youth he formed the band called “Tijucanos do Ritmo” (Tijucanos of rhythm ) and later the another band called “The Sputniks”, where he knew Roberto Carlos and also Erasmos Carlos who later became great names of the movement known as “Jovem Guarda”.

At that this time he worked as a delivery, where he said it was good because he always could eat some food without pay. When he was sixteen-years-old he went to live in EUA, It was 1959, and there he knew by the first time the soul music that would make all difference in his life. He stayed in EUA till 1964, when he was arrested for robbery and Drugs possession, and sent back to Brazil.

In the 70´s, he launched his first album with the great hits such as Azul da cor do Mar (Bue as the Sea) and Primavera (Spring). His hoarse voice increases each time more fans and also the number of concerts. His temper and his demanding was more and more clear, often him gave an earful on a musician or technician in the middle of the concert. If by one hand his fame beginning increases as a good singer, by the other hand his fame as controversial beginning increases too.

Frequently he fights with promoter, agents, record label and also he started to miss some of his concerts. It would be one of his most famous features, how well remembered the Brazilian music Kaleb SoaresI remember that there was in late 80´s, all Saturday at the Sporting Society Palmeiras, a party which was known as Chic Show with Samba-Rock, the music style that Tim Maia was one of the first to play. At that party, which always started with the band Chic Show or Zimbabwe Group , Tim Maia was often one of the special guests. So the joke was, if someone said “Saturday there is Chic Show with Tim Maia and I won´t go too”, It because he always missed the concert or sometimes he started to play, and then asked more of sound quality, he asked once..twice… if he didn´t get enough he simply walked out of the stage. It was really funny.”

Despite the great number of hits, such as Descobridor do Sete Mares (Discoverer of the seven seas) , Me de Motivos (Give me reasons), Voce (You), his addiction to drugs and alcohol (sometimes came to drink three bottle of whisky per day) and obesity left him with a delicate state of health. In March of 1998, at the beginning of a concert he started feeling sick and was taken to Hospital. After some days he had two heart attacks and died in March 15th 1998, left the Brazil without the superintendent, as called by Jorge Ben Jor.

The Tim Maia´s songs and style still nowadays influencing thousands of musicians in all Brazil.

To Bianca Fachel, the singer of the Brazilian band Baque Soul “without doubt, Tim Maia is one of the biggest Brazilian singers. He with the others pioneers introduced the soul music in Brazil (…) He is a pride and an example of art, composition, arrangement to new generation of brazilian musicians. I like of his authenticity, of his true madness, of his talent.
